Hi, friends! I have a great black bean burger recipe for you. I first came across this recipe on Sally’s Baking Addiction quite some time ago, and I’ve adapted it to my tastes.
This recipe is well loved and well received. Even picky kids like these burgers. They are hearty, healthy, and full of flavor. In fact, whenever we do meatless meals, which is a few times a month, my kids often request this recipe.
The burgers can be made in the oven, in a skillet, or on the grill. I prefer the oven method as I’m afraid the high heat from the grill will dry them out.
One of the tips that’s recommended in making these black bean burgers is to partially dry out the beans in the oven. Having made these several times, I concur. The reason is because beans can get very mushy once they start to blend in the food processor with other ingredients. Partially drying the black beans helps prevent the mushiness.
They are excellent on a toasted bun of course, but I have also eaten them inside a lettuce wrap. One time, when I had a couple left over from dinner, I placed one over a bed of salad greens and topped with italian dressing. It was definitely delicious that way!
When making these burgers, a couple binding ingredients will need to be added, mainly eggs and bread crumbs, much like the way beef burgers are made. Feel free to swap out the condiments for your preferred choices. I’ll make some recommendations below.
Enjoy!
The Best Black Bean Burger
Ingredients
- 2 cans (14 oz) black beans, drained, rinsed, and patted dry
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3/4 cup chopped bell pepper (red, yellow, orange, or green)
- 1 cup finely diced onion
- 3 garlic cloves, pressed or minced
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 3/4 cup feta cheese
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons spicy mustard
- salt and pepper to taste
- toasted buns (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350.
- Drain and rinse the black beans. Lay them flat on a rimmed baking sheet. Partially dry them with a paper towel. Bake 15 minutes. Set aside to cool.
- In the mean time, saute bell pepper, onion, and garlic in the olive oil over medium high heat until soft, about 3-5 minutes.
- Place peppers, onions, and garlic in bowl of food processor. Add remaining ingredients except the black beans, and pulse everything a couple times. Add black beans, pulse again and mix well, but leave a few larger pieces of beans.
- Form 1/3 cup of mixture into patties.
- Preheat oven to 375. Line baking sheet with parchment paper and place patties on sheet. Bake 10 minutes, flip, then bake 10 more minutes. Serve on a toasted bun with your favorite toppings or over a bed of lettuce. Enjoy!
